BOER WAR Private Ernest John Timblick of Enfield, Otago served his Country in the South African (Boer) War sometime during the period of the war which was 11 Oct 1899 - 31 May 1902. Ernest's unit was the South Island Regiment - G Squadron, tenth Contingent which sailed on the Ship "Norfolk" 19 April 1902. (Wikipedea states "Varicocele is an abnormal enlargement of the veins in the scrotum draining the testicles") Response Yes . very slight one. Is he free from varicose veins? Yes Is he free from hemorrhoids or other diseases of anus? Yes Is he free from inveterate or contagious skin disease? Yes Are the movements of all joints full and perfect? Yes Is there are distinct mark of vaccination? Yes Is he in good mental and bodily health and free from any physical defect likely to interfere with the efecient performance of his duties? Yes Finally, is he fit or unfit for active service? FIT The eye tests all perfect too! ------------------------------------------- On the 12th April or 14th April 1902 the Attestation form was signed "Attestation form for Volunteers to serve with Imperial Troops in South Africa. Regimental No. 9453 South Island Battalion Volunteer corp or district: North Otago M.R. Rank and length of service in such corps? 12 months. Address ; Enfield, near Oamaru, Labourer. Age 22 years Height 5 feet 6.1/4 inches, eight 10 stone Religion: Presbyterian N.O.K. John Timblick, Father, Enfield. Sworn at Paddington 12 day of April 1902. On the 19th April 1902 Ernest sailed to South Africa. In August 1902 Ernest is discharged from the Army The Certificate of Discharge reads :- "he is discharged in consequence of expiration of term of service. Character Very Good. Medals and Decorations : 2nd Boer War. Service 127 days Discharged aged 22 and 5 months. So, Ernest served between Apr,then May, Jun, Jly, and discharged mid August to return home. On the 24th February 1904 Ernest acknowledges receipt of an Imperial South African War Medal and clasps. On the 23rd September 1908 there is a further receipt acknowledging receipt of a war clasp for service in South Africa 1902. -------------------------------------------------------------- Waitaki Electoral Roll (supplementary) 1908 Ernest John Farquhar, Enfield, Farmer AND Amy Hannah Timblick, Enfield, Domestic Duties (Hannah married in 1914) John would have been 29 and his 27 year old Sister may have been looking after him on the Enfield farm? -------------------------------------------------------------- WORLD WAR 1 On the 22nd April 1916, Ernest at the age of 36 years 8months, AGAIN goes through a medical to join the Military. His weight has gone up a little and he has had now has a false upper plate. He is still very fit with a chest measurement min 36.25" and max. 36.25" He also states his religious profession to be Anglican when in 1902 it was given as Presbyterian! He now has a distinctive " irregularly oval scar on anterior surface of left thigh" He is proclaimed FIT for foreign service! On the 25th July 1916 recorded as enlisted at Trentham On the 26th July 1916 an Oath is taken by recruit on attestation.(at Trentham) Occupation given as Farmer residing at Maheno. (self employed) N.O.K. John Timblick, Father, Maheno, Oamaru. Are you willing to serve in the Expeditionary Force etc? Answer :- Yes...wish to go in August. Sadly, it was not to be! The name and address of next-of-kin alters to Charles Albert Timblick (Brother) Te Aroha According to Military records Ernest was admitted into Trentham Hospital on the 24th September 1916. Roll of Honour Sept 29th 1916 32095 Private Ernest John Timblick NZTU Sec 3 New Zealand Son of John and Eliza Timblick. Born at Oamaru. Served in the South African campaign. Buried in Te Aroha Public Cemetary. World War 1 - Died before embarkation from New Zealand. The Oamaru newspaper reported on 7 October 1916 TIMBLICK E.J. (Private 37)., died 29 Sept 1916 at Featherston, eldest son of Eliza & John (Timblick) Maheno, 19th Reinforcement. Ernest's death certificate shows that he never married. The cause of his death at the age of 37 is given as 1 (a) Cerebro Spinal Meningitus (b) cannot read looks like NIL? 2. Duration of last illness 5 days. Dr H Hunter Ernest was buried in Te Aroha Church of England : officiating Minister G H Morse Footnote:- His Sister Sarah Florence Farquhar (nee Timblick) was pregnant at the time and named her son "Ernest" He was born in Wanganui 29th January 1917
